Commonwealth Achieves Million Hour Safety Milestone at Calumet

HOUSTON – (October 23, 2007) Commonwealth Engineering and Construction, LLC has achieved the distinction of compiling one million safe work hours in directing a series of upgrade projects at Calumet Lubricants’ Shreveport, Louisiana facility.

The project team was recognized with awards from both the Safety Council of East Texas and American Society of Safety Engineers – East Texas Chapter. In each case, the safety organizations presented dual awards acknowledging Commonwealth and Calumet for reaching both one million hours without a lost time accident (LTA) and 500,000 hours without a recordable incident per the criteria established by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The one million hours with zero LTAs compares to the national average for LTAs on construction projects of 2.4 per 200,000 work hours. The total recordable incident rate for the project during the first one million hours was 0.47 per 200,000 work hours, which is well below the national average of 2.7 and also below the project’s self-imposed goal of 0.75. The first aid rate (minor injuries below the level of either lost time accidents or recordables) tracked at 3.17, below the 6.0 target established for this project.

Commonwealth and facility owner Calumet co-sponsored a safety celebration at the facility on October 18 to commemorate these milestones. In addition to receiving awards from the two safety organizations, Commonwealth and Calumet officials lauded the project team of more than 1,000 for their diligence in maintaining safe work practices during this intensive project to expand and upgrade Calumet’s production capabilities.
